How to Cancel Your Lawn Service: 3 Important Steps to Take

4 MINUTE READ

Nobody likes breaking up. It’s awkward, it’s ugly, and there’s that whole “it’s not you, it’s me” stuff, when we all know it was them, not you, right?

But when your lawn care company does you wrong, it’s time to break up. Are you wondering how to cancel your lawn service?

After all, you deserve the best. You should get what you pay for. You should be able to communicate. You should expect them to actually show up, for Pete’s sake.

You want your weeds gone, is that too much to ask?

So, it’s time to fire your lawn care company. Here are 3 important steps to take when canceling lawn care services.

1. Give Them a Chance to Make Things Right

Before you cancel your lawn service, give them a chance to make things right.

Pick up the phone and have an actual conversation. (Hopefully, someone will answer the phone.) Maybe there’s a reasonable explanation for the problems that bug you.

Maybe it rained at your house after they visited to spray your weeds, so the weeds didn’t die.

Maybe your irrigation system automatically turned on after their visit and washed away the weed control.

Maybe all it will take to make things right is a return visit to kill the weeds. (To be fair, it often takes 10 days or longer for products to kill weeds. So, give things a fair chance before you get upset about this one.)

Maybe you’re convinced they damaged your lawn during their last visit — but you actually have grubs that did the dirty work.
GrubMaybe weed killer drifted and killed a few of your plants. They can make things right by replacing your plants.

Sometimes service gets delayed because customers forgot to pay their bill. (Yikes, could that be it?)

You get the idea. Get to the root of the problem before you jump ship.

2. Get Confirmation When You Cancel Your Lawn Care Service

So maybe this relationship can’t be saved and it’s time to switch your lawn care service.

Be firm. They might offer you a discount or other perks to keep you on board. But if you’ve already given them a chance to redeem themselves, and they didn’t, stand firm.

You can have a new company on standby, but don’t officially switch to another lawn care service before you cancel your current service — and have proof of the cancellation.

Your current company might still show up, even after you cancel. Or they might not refund your money.

You don’t want two invoices.

Get written confirmation that you’ve canceled so you won’t get further charges.

3. Switch to a New Lawn Care Service

A new relationship is always exciting!

Just make sure your new lawn care company won’t let you down.

If they don’t ask about your concerns, how will you know they’ll fix them?

A few other tips for hiring a new lawn service:

  • Check company websites. Read customer reviews there and check their Google reviews.
  • Ask questions. It means a little more time and effort on your part, but it’s worth it to ferret out the best company for your lawn, right?
  • Do they have an educated, experienced team? Does the company’s staff have horticulture degrees? Have they had significant, targeted training? Years of experience — or weeks?
  • Will they offer helpful suggestions? You want skilled, educated pros who know enough about your lawn’s needs to offer individualized suggestions, just for you.
  • Can you talk to your lawn care technician? How accessible are the technicians who provide your lawn care services? If you have a follow-up question or a specific concern, can you reach them? Or are they like ghosts who hover around for a bit, then vanish?
