Do I Still Need to Spray My Yard for Mosquitoes & Ticks in Fall?

Written by Kevin Buck | Oct 22, 2024 5:55:06 PM

Once you’re shopping for your vampire costume for Halloween and trying on fake fangs, you shouldn’t have to be swatting real live bloodsuckers trying to bite you with their fangs, right?

Are mosquitoes still out in October, sipping cider and trying to find a pumpkin that will sit flat on the porch?

How long is mosquito season? Mosquito season in Wisconsin and Minnesota typically ends in October when the first hard frost kills the whiny pests.

Mosquito control programs usually wrap up for the season by the end of September, with the last three-week treatment lasting into October when mosquitoes die out. Ticks don’t die in the fall or winter, but become less active when it’s cold.

The first treatments here depend on the weather but typically start in mid-May.

How Does Professional Mosquito Spraying Work?

The best way to control ticks and mosquitoes in your yard is to enlist the help of professionals who spray every shady nook and cranny where the pests hang out.

Mosquito control spray is applied to the perimeter of your yard, hitting the spots where mosquitoes lurk and breed.

  • Underneath plant leaves
  • Shady areas
  • Wet areas
  • Under decks
  • Under tree canopies
  • Wood piles

How fast does yard mosquito control work? Right away. Faster than you can find that stash of Halloween candy you bought early on sale and hid…somewhere.

RainMaster’s mosquito barrier spray reduces mosquitoes on your property all season long, with regular visits every three weeks.

Then, yay, they’re dead. No waiting. Happily hang out in your yard again, knowing you’re protecting your family and pets from annoying, disease-carrying mosquitoes.

It’s a huge relief. Mosquitoes are still a pain well into October, when you're ready to move on to backyard football games and yard cleanup.

Bonus: the barrier spray kills ticks, too, which are also still on the prowl in October.  Kill two annoying pests for one price.

Beware of any mosquito spraying company in Eau Claire or Minneapolis that promises to completely rid your yard of mosquitoes.

We call our mosquito spray service “mosquito reduction.” You absolutely will see a big reduction in mosquitoes and ticks.

When to Spray for Mosquitoes?

How often do you need mosquito yard spraying?

One visit controls mosquitoes — and ticks, too — for three weeks. So you’ll need six visits total throughout the season, one every three weeks for your Eau Claire Wi or Minneapolis yard.

Just like the insect repellent you spray on yourself only lasts so long, it’s the same with the mosquito barrier spray. You need a few visits for continued protection.

Also, mosquitoes are continually reproducing — one of their more annoying habits — so there’s always a fresh frustrating batch to send packing.

Your six visits from spring through fall will reduce mosquitoes throughout the outdoor seasons, from those first fresh days of spring when you’re admiring the tulips you planted right through fall when you pull out your flannel shirts and start baking apple crisp, with drastically fewer mosquitoes to ruin your fun.

Are Mosquito Control Programs Safe for My Family and Pets?

Yes. Stay inside when specialists are in your yard spraying for ticks and mosquitoes and while the treatment areas are still wet.

Then, once the spray has fully dried, feel free to go back outside. That takes about 30 minutes.

Other Ways to Control Mosquitoes

There are other things you can do to control mosquitoes in your yard:

  • Get rid of areas where water accumulates. Many of these spots could be hiding in your yard, creating the perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes: old tires, clogged gutters, buckets, wheelbarrows, and empty flower pots.
  • Remove leaf litter. Mosquitoes love that damp, dark stuff.
  • Clear tall grasses and brush around your house and at the edge of your lawn.
  • Keep your lawn mowed.
  • Stack any wood neatly and in a dry area.
  • Keep playground equipment, decks, and patios away from yard edges and trees.
  • Invite birds and bats. These flying friends love mosquitoes — to eat. So, encourage them to hang out at your place and feast by providing houses for them.
  • Turn on fans. Mosquitoes are weak fliers, so electric fans strategically placed around your patio or deck make it harder for them to get to you and bite. Fans also help blow away the carbon dioxide you exhale, so the mosquitoes can’t find you as easily.
